What Is Google AI Overview and How Does It Select Sources?

Google AI Overview (often shown as AI Overviews) is a Google Search feature that places an AI-generated summary near the top of results for certain queries. Its goal is to help users quickly grasp the “gist” of a topic, especially when a question is complex, exploratory, or would normally require multiple searches, by synthesizing information from multiple web sources and presenting it in a single, coherent response with supporting links.

How does it work?

Unlike a traditional featured snippet (which typically highlights one passage from one page), AI Overviews can combine ideas across sources, reconcile terminology, and provide structured explanations (e.g., definitions, key points, comparisons, or step-by-step guidance). Google notes that AI Overviews may use techniques such as “query fan-out,” where the system runs multiple related searches across subtopics to assemble a better overall answer and identify relevant pages to cite.

Does Google give an AI overview for every search query?

AI Overviews are not displayed for every search. Google states they appear when its systems determine an AI summary would be additive beyond classic results, and the interface still includes links so users can explore the underlying pages.

Are they 100% accurate?

Because these summaries are generated by AI, Google also cautions that they can be inaccurate and encourages users to double-check important information. This risk is especially sensitive in areas like health, where journalists and experts have documented cases of misleading or harmful overviews, prompting ongoing scrutiny and changes.

To summarize, Google AI Overviews is a Search feature that shows an AI-generated summary near the top for some queries. It synthesizes information from multiple web sources, often using techniques like query “fan-out,” and provides supporting links. It doesn’t appear for every search and may be wrong, so users should verify important topics, especially health-related ones.
